The SUBMERGED season in 2024 was Tech Clan’s final year in FLL — and it was our most ambitious yet. Focused on ocean exploration and marine technology, this theme challenged us to think big, dive deep, and engineer solutions for one of Earth’s most mysterious frontiers.

For the SUBMERGED season, Tech Clan developed a solution to make ocean exploration safer, smarter, and more sustainable. Our concept was a swarm of autonomous surface robots designed to map and monitor unexplored ocean terrain using advanced cameras and environmental sensors.

These robots would travel across the ocean surface, collecting data and generating real-time maps of previously unseen areas. Each unit would be engineered to blend into the marine ecosystem, minimizing disruption to wildlife. To prevent marine creatures from mistaking the robots for food, we designed a responsive system: if approached, the robot would emit gentle warning sounds and activate a moving attachment to signal that it is not edible — a simple but effective way to protect both the robot and the surrounding sea life.

Our goal was to create a modular, scalable system that could support scientific research, environmental monitoring, and even disaster response — all while respecting the delicate balance of ocean ecosystems.

During competition, we faced unexpected challenges — from mechanical hiccups to last-minute coding bugs — but we stayed calm, adapted fast, and supported each other. One of our proudest moments was completing a difficult mission sequence flawlessly under pressure, earning cheers from the crowd.
